Chapter 6: Explosion

Wily walked away from the lab door. He'd recently taken to spying on Protoman and Dr. Light while they worked on their late-night project. He'd known they were up to something for a while. Last week had confirmed his suspicion.

When Light had asked Protoman to help them, he had noticed that Light and Protoman worked well together. Too well for two people who had never worked together on building a robot before. It was almost natural how they worked together. Light barely had to open his mouth before Protoman anticipated his need. Even though Protoman was a robot, that still didn't explain it. That kind of familiarity came only from working together previously.

Wily then started following Protoman around. One night, he had follwed Protoman to the lab, where he had first found out about Mega Man and Roll. It had come as a huge shock to his ego. Light could share this project with Protoman, but not with him. It hurt that Light no longer trusted him.

Now there was tonight's revalation to deal with. That Protoman had feelings and free will was appaling. The stupid thing actually hid something from him. That, in Wily's opinion, was giving the robot too much power. He had to be reprogrammed. Since he couldn't get Light's help in this, he'd have to do it on his own.

One thing was certain, however. Now that Wily had found out about Light's opinion of him, Wily wasn't going to invite Light to come with him.

Wily chuckled to himself. He was a fool not to have thought of it sooner. The one way to keep monsters like Protoman out of society was to control society. As it was, no one listened to him about their dangers. However, if he controled society he could stop the production of humanoid robots. There wouldn't be anything to fear.

Wily already had a plan to take over the city mentally mapped out. He had finished construction on a forest on the outskirts of town a few days ago. Also, he had installed control chips in the six robots. Whenever he chose to activate the chips, they'd be under his complete and total control. There was no way to override the chips. He had seen to that.

Wily chuckled as he walked off. It would be so easy. The only one that suspected would soon be gone forever. Then, nothing would stop him.

Protoman walked out of the lab. He had just finished cleaning up for Dr. Light. As was their habit, Light would go to bed early and Protoman would clean up. The Doctor needed more sleep than Protoman did, and he was glad to help his creator even if it was only by giving him more sleep.

I forgot my sheild, he thought. Protoman started to turn back towards the lab, but was stopped. While Protoman was wrapped in his thoughts, Wily had walked up behind him. Protoman hadn't felt the electrical shock that ripped through his body until it had taken control. By the time he reacted, he was already slipping into unconsciousness.

Protoman woke to a world of pain. His entire body felt like it was on fire. Also, he couldn't move. Waves of panic swept over him as realization dawned on him.

I'm being reprogrammed, he thought. That single thought was enough to partially break through the force holding his body. A single scream echoed throughout the previously silent lab.

Wily turned abruptly from where he was working at the computer. He gasped as what he saw registered in his mind. Protoman was weakly struggling against the table restraints. That he was able to move at all surprised Wily. The electrical shock alone should have had him out for hours at least, much longer than he had been. The reprogramming as well should have kept him sedated. It had paralyzed his entire body. Wily was unsure as to how Protoman had broken it's hold.

Is this some form of self-preservation? Wily quickly dismissed the thought. Protoman was a robot, and nothing more. This was just one of his programmed resonses to being attacked.

Protoman struggled to break free. As he fought, he scanned the room. He was back in the lab, strapped to a table in the center of the room with wires attatched to the circuits in his head. Wily was sitting next to the computer staring at him in amazement. Behind Wily, Protoman could see the computer screen's display of his programming. He breathed an internal sigh of relief as he noticed that nothing had been changed yet.

He must have just started, Protoman thought.

Wily laughed cruely. "Struggle all you want. You can't stop me." Wily then turned back to the computer and started his work.

"No." Protoman screamed as he felt Wily begin to change his programming. The shear terror of being reprogrammed lent him new strength. He broke the restraint holding his upperbody, and leveled his Buster. In seconds it was charged, and he released the built up energy.

Wily dove for cover as the ball of energy contacted with the screen. The computer shattered under the force of the shot. The connection to Protoman was severed, and all Wily's work was lost as the computer shut off. None of the programming could take effect. Like all computer programs, the changes had to be saved or they wouldn't hold.

Protoman broke the restraint holding his legs and leaped off the table. He turned in time to see Doctor Light enter the room.

"What's going on here?" The surprised doctor asked.

There wasn't time to answer. The explosion of the computer had set off a chain reaction as the equipment next to it exploded in the blaze. The entire lab was set on fire as more and more equipment exploded.

"Mega Man! Roll!" Light said as he realized the two robots would be lost in the blaze if nothing was done soon.

Light was at the storage compartment used to hold them in moments. He had the two robots out and was trying to drag them out of the room.

Protomanpicked up his shield from where he had left it and ran across the room towards the doctor. Light didn't see the burst of fire and metal that was coming towards him. Protoman barely had enough time to get to the Doctor before the burst did. Quickly, Protoman turned with his sheild and absorbed the force of the blast.

Maneuvering carefully, he turned partly and activated the teleporter recently installed in Mega Man. He smiled as his brother, sister, and father were teleported to safety.

The distraction, however, caused him to be knocked into the wall by the blast. He heard a loud crunch as a shower of metal hit him from a new direction. He looked down at his shield, where the damage was. His teleporter had been damaged, but was still usable. He quickly activated it before it could be damaged further.

Protoman looked around when the teleport finished. He gasped in shock.

This isn't where I was supposed to land. The area he was in was totally unfamiliar. That wasn't surprising to Protoman because he had only been in the city a few times, and not in the surrounding countryside.

I hope the city is nearby, Protoman thought, and began walking.
