Doctor Thomas Xavier Light stepped off the plane. At 25, he was fresh out of college. Exactly one month ago he had finished his Doctorate in Robotics. Shortly after that he and his friend, Wily both received job offers here in Mega City. However, the one condition of the job was that they both work together. Evidently, Psitronics had noticed how well they worked together.
"You know, moving forward would be a nice touch." Wily complained from behind him. "You're holding the rest of us up."
Light looked around, startled. He was still standing on the plane's stairs, so he quickly got off. "Sorry," he said, blushing.
"No problem." Wily said easily as he handed Light his luggage off of the rack and picked up his own. "Why don't we go hail a taxi?"
"Sounds like a good idea to me." Light walked out of the airport and hailed the taxi.
They deposited their luggage in the trunk and entered the taxi. Wily told the driver the address of the appartment that Light had lined up for them a week ago.
The drive gave Light time to think about his future. He couldn't wait until he got to work tomorrow. He had been hired to design more efficient robots and he knew how he could do it. He planned to build a humanoid robot. The robot would be able to perform multiple functions. It could do more than a regular human worker could because you could simply program it with the techniques of all that you wanted it to be able to do.
As soon as he got to work tomorrow he was going to propose the idea to his boss. Wily was in complete agreement with Light's logic. Light already had designs drawn up. In theory the robot would work. All that was needed was to construct it.
"We're here," Wily exclaimed.
The two of them piled out of the taxi and gathered their luggage. Wily paid the driver. Then they entered the building and headed to their apartment. Once they were inside they examinded the area and started to unpack.
"It's a lot bigger than I thought it would be." Wily commented.
"Definetly. From the price we're paying I thought it would be really cramped. I'm not complaining though." Light said.
Wily grinned. He peeked into one of the adjoining rooms.
"This one's completely empty," he commented.
Light looked over Wily's shoulder into the room. "Lab?" He asked.
Wily chuckled. "For some reason I thought you'd suggest that."
"Of course. Well?"
"'Well' what?"
"Lab or no lab?"
Wily sighed. "Lab."
"Yeah!"
"You're too easily amused," Wily said while shaking his head.
"You just now noticed? What an amazing thing," Light commented.
The next day...
"No. Absolutely not," the Foreman said.
Light and Wily stared at him in confusion, unable to grasp his logic.
"But it's be more efficient to build a humanoid robot that could perform multiple tasks," Light protested.
"It's all too costly. It is easier and cheaper to build a pair of arms than an entire body, and that's the end of this discussion."
Wily and Light left the office. Once they were back in their lab they vented their frustration.
"Stubborn and uninventive, that's what he is," Wily muttered.
"Completely closed to new ideas," Light agreed.
"Now what do we do?" Wily asked.
"We build the robots he wants," Light said.
"But what about the humanoid robot?"
Light sighed. "I guess that project will have to be put on hold for a little while, at least until we can complete our home lab."
"What does that have to do with it?"
"If we can't build it here, we'll do it on our own." Light grinned. "Besides, this way we get all the credit."
Wily grinned as well. "Persistent, I'll give you that."
"I won't allow my dreams to be squashed by anyone. You know that."
"That I do, my friend. That I do."
